HEARING IMPAIRMENT: Hearing sensitivity is indicated by the quietest sound that an animal can detect, called the hearing threshold. In the case of humans and some animals, this threshold can be accurately measured by a behavioral audiogram. A record is made of the quietest sound that consistently prompts a response from the listener. The test is carried out for sounds of different frequencies. There are also electro-physiological tests that can be performed without requiring a behavioral response.
Normal hearing thresholds within any given species are not the same for all frequencies. If different frequencies of sound are played at the same amplitude, some will be perceived as loud, and others quiet or even completely inaudible. Generally, if the gain or amplitude is increased, a sound is more likely to be perceived. Ordinarily, when animals use sound to communicate, hearing in that type of animal is most sensitive for the frequencies produced by calls, or in the case of humans, speech. All levels of the auditory system contribute to this sensitivity toward certain frequencies, from the outer ear's physical characteristics to the nerves and tracts that convey the nerve impulses of the auditory portion of the brain.
A hearing loss exists when an animal has diminished sensitivity to the sounds normally heard by its species. In humans, the term hearing impairment is usually reserved for people who have relative insensitivity to sound in the speech frequencies. The severity of a hearing loss is categorized according to the increase in volume that must be made above the usual level before the listener can detect it. In profound deafness, even the loudest sounds that can be produced by an audiometer (an instrument used to measure hearing) may not be detected.
Another aspect to hearing involves the perceived clarity of a sound rather than its amplitude. In humans, that aspect is usually measured by tests of speech perception. These tests measure one's ability to understand speech, not to merely detect sound. There are very rare types of hearing impairments which affect speech understanding alone.
Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors. It has historically been defined as an Intelligence Quotient score under 70. Once focused almost entirely on cognition, the definition now includes both a component relating to mental functioning and one relating to individuals' functional skills in their environment. As a result, a person with a below-average intelligence quotient (BAIQ) may not be considered mentally retarded. Syndromic mental retardation is intellectual deficits associated with other medical and behavioral signs and symptoms. Non-syndromic mental retardation refers to intellectual deficits that appear without other abnormalities.

What is cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens - the part of the eye that is responsible for focusing light. The lens is made up mainly of water and protein. Over time, protein can build up, clouding the light that passes through the eye, making sight blurred or fuzzy. For most people, cataract is a natural result of ageing.Often cataract develops in both eyes at the same time. The symptoms tend to be a gradual blurring of vision, which if left untreated can result in a total loss of sight.

Cataract and poverty

Removing cataract is a relatively simple surgical procedure. It is common and easily accessible in developed countries, but in the developing countries, many people with cataract go without treatment
Why is this?
  • There is a lack of staff and the equipment needed to significantly reduce the growing backlog of cataract operations.
  • Patients are often wary of having surgery.
  • When people with cataract live far from towns and cities, getting to hospital involves a great deal of travel and expense.
  • As well as the travel costs, people will not be able to work immediately after the operation and worry about losing income.

The training of general teachers at pre-service and in-service levels should address the issue

of education of children with disabilities, so that teachers are better equipped to work in an
inclusive environment. Some of the issues in training that need to be addressed include the
methodology to be adopted for identifying children with disabilities; classroom management;
use of appropriate teaching methodologies; skills for adapting the curriculum; development of
teaching–learning materials that are multi-sensory in nature; evaluation of learning; etc. The
time has come to scale up successful experiments on teacher training such as the Multi-site
Action Research Project and the Indian adaptation of the UNESCO Teacher Education
Resource Pack, since these experiences are lying dormant.
